In Night by Elie Wiesel, there are many passages that caused me to have an emotional response. There were two passages in particular that caused me to have an emotional response. The first one is. “They were forced to dig huge trenches. When they had finished their work, the men from the Gestapo began theirs. Without passion or haste, they shot their prisoners, who were forced to approach the trench one by one and offer their necks. Infants were tossed into the air and used as targets for the machine guns.” (p.6) This passage really shocked me because it was the first time in the novel that something extremely horrible happened. The other quote that really shocked me was. “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.” This passage really moved me because of the way he wrote it. By saying I shall never forget before each line it really makes me realize how scarring this was for him. By wrighting Night in first-person, Elie Wiesel makes the story a lot more personal even if you have very little or no connection to the Holocaust.

  1. Connor, I agree with what you said about how Wiesel writing the book in first person made it easier to relate to on a personal level.

  2. Conor,

I really understand your emotions when reading this paragraph. You explain them very well. You might want to try to weave together your quotes better instead of bluntly presenting them. Otherwise, excellent work!
