The novel Night is a memoir of Elie Wiesel and his experience during the Holocaust.  “I didn’t know that this was the moment in time and the place where I was leaving my mother and Tzipora forever. I kept walking, my father holding my hand” (Wiesel, 29).  I was heartbroken when I read this because Elie didn’t know that would be the last time he would see his mother and sister. I also remember that earlier in the book they said that families wouldn’t be separated so he wasn’t that worried. “A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes . . . children thrown into flames….How was that possible that men, women and children were being burned and the world kept silent?” (Wiesel, 32). I was shocked when I read this. Just because children and babies aren’t of use because they can’t do labor work doesn’t mean you have to murder them in cruel ways. I like Wiesel’s writing style. He often describes things in a very fascinating  way, for example like these: “Monday went by like a small summer cloud, like a dream in the first hours of dawn.” (Wiesel, 18). “As for my mother, she was walking, her face a mask, without a word, deep in thought.” (Wiesel, 19). “Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky.” (Wiesel, 34).

  1. Ife,

I felt the same way when Elie was saying how he was not sure if he would ever see his mother and sister again. I can't comprehend not knowing if I were going to see my mother and sister again without even being able to say goodbye. It also took me by surprise when I read that they were burning the babies alive. I don't understand how the Nazis could do this to children and babies without a second thought.
