“A truck drew close and unloaded it’s hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this with my own eyes . . . children thrown into the flames. (is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep eludes me?)” (p.32) when I first read this I had to take a moment to pause and reflect on the sheer insanity of this. How could someone in their right mind do something this awful? How could someone feel so much hate that it brings them to order for children to be burned alive? I can’t wrap my head around it. its horrifying to remember that this book isn’t fictional. “Bela Katz the son of an important merchant in my town . . . succeeded in slipping us a note. He told us that having been chosen for his strength, he had been forced to place his own father’s body into the furnace.” (p. 35) This must have been heart-wrenching for Bela. I hate even having to think about it and it’s a whole different experience having to actually do it. “. . . a man with a gray beard and the gaze of a dreamer. His back was hunched from untold nights studying.” (p.14) I think this description of the man was intriguing because it tells of more than his appearance. It tells you a bit about his personality and what he spends his time doing too. “Eyes of a dreamer” and “untold nights studying” gives me more information than just, “he was an old man with a hunched back and a gray beard.”

  1. Leah,

I really enjoyed your post and I totally agree with you. The cruelty of these methods of torture are insane. The book goes into detail on how these heinous acts affected Elie and other Jews, but how do you think these situations affected the German soldiers and the ones in charge of this outrage? Do you think they slept knowing how many lives and families they altered? Do you think it's right for Jews to lose faith in a time like this? Let me know.

    Myles.

  2. I agree with what you are saying about the quote and how you needed to reflect. I loved how much you described your feelings and you really explained how the quote made you feel. I also liked how you described the characters feelings and thought about how the situation made them feel. I really liked your response and I think you did a good job!
