“Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed...”(Wiesel 34). This quote is one of the most powerful and moving quotes I have ever seen. It describes so many horrible things and what Wiesel’s reaction to them was. Children burned alive. It is such a crushing and sad piece of history. Wiesel says that his faith was consumed and that he was deprived of all desire to live. It takes something beyond my understanding to deprive a person of their desire to live. In situations like these, time slows down in the book while in the less intense parts it runs quickly. It is an intriguing choice of pace. For example. in the first few pages of the book it mostly skims over a great many things. The book also puts forward examples of humanity. “Hell does not last forever . . . And now, here is a prayer, or rather a piece of advice: let there be camaraderie among you. We are all brothers and share the same fate. The same smoke hovers over all our heads. Help each other. That is the only way to survive”(41). Even in a place such as Auschwitz, there is compassion. It is nice to see some humanity here and there. This speech may have inspired people to keep fighting in their darkest hour. And the advice he speaks is true. Help each other.

  1. Hi Max,

Your blog post inspired me. It sent a message of kindness, and I appreciated that. Now with the quote aspect, I do agree that it is a powerful quote. It shows how he feels doomed, in a sense. That quote and the way you explained it made me feel. Switching gears, I did notice that he seems to slow down intense parts, and I commented on that in my blog post. Nicely done!

  2. Hi Max,
I agree with you on the part about how the quote is one of the most powerful and moving quotes I have ever seen! I love how you intertwined the writing style with the reflections on your emotions. I think the way you tied it up and summarized it into the final message was a brilliant idea! Incredible job.
