Blog post #1 - Wills
So far night is a moving novel Ellie is telling us about his experience with the holocaust and how he survived. His writing style is interesting in that he tells the story through the eyes of him as a kid but describes it like an adult would. This is a passage that was very shocking and absurd to even think about “Infants were tossed into the air and used as targets for machine guns” (Wiesel 6). Thats a good passage because it shows how terrible and depressing the Holocaust really was. This is another passage that was really moving because Ellie is remembering his past and it shows the pain he was starting to go through seeing all the people die. “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity” (Wiesel 34). That passage alone explains all the emotions he had during the first night at the camp, only the first night.
Wills, what do you mean when you say he describes it like an adult would? I'd be more perplexed if he described it like a kid would. He wrote this book when he was an adult so it only makes sense that he described it that way. Other than that, great job on the post.
ReplyDeleteGreetings William,
ReplyDeleteI very much enjoyed reading your post although your statement does raise a question. Following your first quote, you described that section of the chapter as "a good passage". What have you deemed as "good" when it comes to a passage? I believe that can mean a variety of things. Please elaborate. In my opinion, that passage was not "good" but powerful or impactful. Anyway, I enjoyed the emphasis you applied on how observing death affected Elie's life. Overall, your post was a great explanation of how Eliezer's horrifying experiences impacted you.
(P.S. please capitalize the N in Night) (First sentence)
