The Snow - Marco
The Snow
Snow was falling heavily,
An icy wind was blowing violently,
I was constantly biting my lips so that they wouldn't freeze.
I ran, feeling neither pain nor cold.
They had orders to shoot anyone who could not sustain the pace.
I continued to run,
not feeling my numb foot,
not even realizing that I was still running,
that I still owned a body that galloped down the road
among thousands of others.
The snow was piled high,
the blocks' windows veiled in frost.
The snow seemed to me
like a very soft, very warm carpet.
It's dangerous to fall asleep in snow.
And now hundreds of cries rose at once,
The death rattle of an entire convoy with the end approaching. All boundaries had been crossed,
Nobody had any strength left.
And the night seemed endless.
It snowed on and on.
We were the masters of nature,
the masters of the world.
We had transcended everything—
Death
Fatigue
our natural needs.
We were stronger than cold and hunger,
stronger than the guns and the desire to die,
doomed and rootless
nothing but numbers
we were the only men on earth.
The snow continued to fall.
Marco,
ReplyDeleteI think you have created a very powerful poem. Some of the most impactful lines for me were "And the night seemed endless." , "that I still owned a body that galloped down the road/ among thousands of others." , and "The snow continued to fall." I appreciate that you chose the death march in the snow for you theme.

Marco,
ReplyDeleteYou had a very clear theme in your poem. Very often, snow is used to symbolize death, so I really like that you used snow as a theme. Your last line "The snow continued to fall" is very powerful because it shows that it is a never-ending night.
